The Rat Pack brought in a lot of veterans to hold down the fort while their prospects develop. What building blocks do they have currently playing with the top team?
Catcher Reese McGuire – 26
McGuire was claimed off waivers from Toronto. He is the captain of the Rat Pack team and his above-average defense more than makes up for a pretty average bat. He has put up 1.1 WAR so far this season, but his worth will be helping to develop the future Rat Pack pitching staff
1st Baseman Connor Joe – 28
Claimed off waivers from Colorado, Joe has produced at the plate for the Rat Pack. He is tied for the team league in home runs with Carlos Gonzalez. His on-base percentage is almost at .400. He has a 1.8 WAR and has been surprisingly stable at first with his glove.
Starting Pitcher Ryan Williams – 29
Williams was purchased from the independent leagues and was immediately installed into the Pack’s rotation. A groundball pitcher and an innings eater, he has put up 1.5 in WAR so far.
Reliever Alex Villarreal – 23
Villarreal was drafted in the 5th round of the 2021 draft and went right to the top team. He has a devastating Fastball/Curve combination. He will learn the ropes as a setup man for the Rat Pack with a ceiling of a dominant closer for the team.
None of these players will be stars for this team, but they provide steady performances to stabilize the club. Vegas has built a 12 game lead over Jersey. Alexi Casilla and Brock Holt have paced the lineup with their timely hitting, while the rotation has been led by great first halves by Kris Johnson and Anibal Sanchez. All these veteran players will be available at the trade deadline. We look forward to seeing how this team develops.
